What Is It

Stress ECG (Exercise Tolerance Test)

A Stress ECG involves walking and jogging on a treadmill while your heart's electrical activity, blood pressure and physical wellbeing are continuously monitored.

The treadmill's speed and incline increase progressively every few minutes to challenge cardiovascular function, following the standardised Bruce Protocol, under continuous clinical supervision.

Ideal for investigating chest pain or breathlessness on exertion, or for occupational, motorsport and aviation medical requirements.

Why you might need a Stress ECG

Common reasons patients book this test
  • Chest pain or tightness on exertion
  • Breathlessness during exercise
  • Palpitations triggered by physical activity
  • Known or suspected coronary artery disease
  • Dizziness or near-fainting during exercise
  • Sports cardiac screening
  • Occupational, motorsport or aviation medical
What It Detects

Conditions identified under exercise

Many cardiac conditions only become apparent when the heart is under physical demand. A stress ECG is specifically designed to reveal these exercise-induced changes.

◈Exercise-induced ischaemia
◈ST segment changes
◈Exercise-induced arrhythmias
◈Abnormal blood pressure response
◈Chronotropic incompetence
◈Exercise tolerance assessment
